As a Senior Engineer, you serve as a specialist in the engineering team that supports the product. You help develop and gain insight into the application architecture. You can distill an abstract architecture into concrete designs and influence their implementation. You apply appropriate software engineering patterns to build robust and scalable systems. You can design and implement architecture independently while influencing fellow engineers through design proposals and feedback. You demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, help the team triage operational issues, and use your expertise to prevent repeat occurrences.
About this team:
Payment Data Services is part of Target’s Payments Platform. We build and maintain the Enterprise Payment Repository, a consolidated data store that makes payment data available across an ecosystem of approximately 10 payment processing systems. We build and support services and data flows that make payment data available for operational, reporting, and analytics needs. We also own the Payment Orchestration Layer, a real-time, data-driven decisioning engine with capabilities to help reduce bot traffic and payment fraud risk and to route payment traffic. Our work requires close collaboration with engineering, product, and business partners across payments.
Technologies:
- Languages: Kotlin, Java, and other JVM-based languages
- Frameworks: Micronaut and related service frameworks
- Data and messaging: Relational databases, Kafka, data ETL, and analytics
- Engineering practices: API development, data pipeline development, and data analytics
- Architecture patterns: Microservices, distributed systems, and event-driven processing
Use your skills, experience, and talents to be part of groundbreaking thinking and visionary goals. As a Senior Engineer, you’ll take the lead as you:
- Apply and maintain knowledge of current and emerging technologies within your areas of expertise. Evaluate new technologies based on their viability within Target’s technical environment, maintainability, and cost of ownership. Initiate and execute research and proof-of-concept activities.
- Manage total product financials and forecasting. Lead service design, lifecycle management, and total cost of ownership.
- Lead code reviews, design reviews, testing, and debugging at the application level. Lead functional design and architecture discussions using process flows and system diagrams to inform decisions.
- Participate in routine and non-routine development, automation, and implementation activities, ensuring architectural and operational requirements and best practices are met.
- Provide technical oversight and coach others through complex or severe technical issues. Lead disaster recovery activities and contribute to disaster recovery planning.
- Embed data quality practices throughout data acquisition, processing, storage, and operational use.
- Independently collaborate with U.S.-based payments teams and partners, including Payment Gateway engineering, in-store payment authorization engineering, payment acceptance business teams, and product managers, to understand needs and drive shared solutions.
- Represent Payment Data Services in design, discovery, and other cross-team meetings during U.S. business hours as needed. Connect colleagues across geographies by bringing decisions, context, and open questions back to the team.
- Design and build reliable APIs and data pipelines that enable analytics capabilities for business teams.
- Explore emerging technologies—including agentic AI, Model Context Protocol (MCP), and large language models (LLMs)—and apply practical knowledge of these tools when they can improve engineering or data workflows.
